A boat ride into this swamp turns up usual suspects like Pied Water Tyrant and Yellow-hooded Blackbird , but also (and most excitingly) three species of kingfisher: Green, American Pygmy and Ringed Kingfisher. Back in 2014 we stumbled upon a juvenile Double-toothed Kite and that was the first and only time I have ever seen that species well.

That’s a threatened habitat, and one much sought after by wildlife enthusiasts. Rather than the usual dismal waiting area there were comfortable seats and drinks, and when our transports arrived, we were placed in two large four wheel drives rather than one, so that we wouldn’t feel cramped.

The Poo Ponds were very productive and the wildlife was making the most of the water available and the shade provided by the excavating equipment. Wallaby seeks shelter beside an excavator. Our first delay was one of the many iron ore trains that transport the ore to the coast from inland. Waiting for a long train!

It is very easy to access the Central Catchment Nature Reserve by public transport. You can sit there and observe the wildlife before continuing on. There are also shelters throughout the nature reserve should you be caught out by the weather. Central Catchment Nature Reserve map. Tree Top Walk. Warning signs.
