Today is the United Nations World Wildlife Day, a time to celebrate and raise awareness of the living world around us. A pair of screeching Blacksmith Lapwings was flying around as six Burchell’s Zebras were quenching their thirst, suspiciously observing surroundings every now and then. The house is a four bedroom, four bath two story, with a deck running around three sides of the upper story, great for wildlife viewing. So far we have seen Impala, Duiker, Greater Kudu, Mongoose, Zebra and warthogs around the neighborhood, and yard. This will act as our base for the next 20 days.

By the time you see this in the United States, I will have had a full week to explore this amazing area, and the wildlife that calls this home. We are on the go until usually around 1:30 give or take a herd of zebras blocking the road. The schedule is a bit daunting, as we are up before 5 AM to get to the gate for the 6AM opening.

Not sure that I impressed them, I chose to bluff them and looked left and right for a suitable tree branch to pick. This actually benefits our local wildlife, because the rainwater then gets trapped in the borrow pit and in some instances it will sustain the wildlife right through our dry months when there is no rainfall at all. The borrow pit has one deep section of water and it is popular with Australasian Grebes.
