Jonathan is originally from San Blas on Mexico’s west coast, a birder’s paradise I have yet to visit. But the past several years he has worked on several projects in Ensenada, just south of San Diego. With 85 species in 6 hours, I’d like to think it was well repaid. That’s me on the right.

36, if my counting is right and there has been no very recent split or lump. Not bad given that the 5 families in the inner circle of the laughingthrush family have a combined number of about 68 species. The Hainan version is sometimes considered a separate species, in which case it is classified as Near Threatened.

At last count, there are 25 species of birds named for U.S. But only two states have more than one bird named for them: Hawaii and California, with nine and seven extant and eponymous species, respectively. states, with varying degrees of geographical relevance (sorry, Tennessee Warbler ).

range largely consists of valuable real estate along the Southern California coast and urban development around San Diego and Los Angeles has eliminated much of its habitat. As a result, the bird has a long history with the Endangered Species Act. If it was not, there would be no listing, as the overall species was not in peril.

I’ve spent a fair bit of time on the ocean on right side of North America. Where the skilled spotter finds needles in haystacks and picks out rarities from more plentiful species. This month I was in San Diego, helping out with and participating in the American Birding Association’s San Diego rally.
