The history of Tembe Elephant Park in South Africa is a slightly unusual one. The park was created as much to protect the local communities from marauding elephants with a hatred of dangerous humans and a lack of interest in the differences between nations as it was to protect the elephants.

Conservation is concerned about protecting populations, species, habitats, ecosystems. There is a reason we talk about wildlife and habitat conservation, not wildlife and habitat preservation.
