The existing villagers joined with the newcomers organizing a whip-round to raise money in the hope of buying it. After a lot of backing and forthing, the vendor accepted our offer and the wood is to become a trust to be protected in perpetuity. There will probably be environmental studies and enhancements to encourage wildlife.

There was a panel discussion too, where I gave the opening lecture on Reva’s wildlife and the value of this area for the polluted city with 2M people. Once I observed a man walking his two small dogs here, passing by a perched White-tailed Eagle but looking down at grass and not noticing the largest raptor in Europe at all.

Costa Rica is well known for national parks and other protected areas than offer access to tropical ecosystems dripping with biodiversity. This refuge came up as #4 on a recent list of the top 25 National Wildlife Refuges that were featured in a great story here by 10000 Birds own Jason Crotty. While most major estuaries in Washington state have been filled, dredged, or developed, Nisqually River’s has been set aside for wildlife.
