Brown Pelicans are quite popular in Louisiana. One of the state’s nicknames is “The Pelican State,” the bird is on the state’s flag, the state seal, the state painting (yes, apparently states have official paintings), as well as on one of Louisiana’s bicentennial coins.

We were woefully under-prepared in terms of planning – which almost kept us from meeting our friends – but we were also surprised and thrilled to learn that not only were Gray Whales migrating past the lighthouse, but Elephant Seals were lounging on a nearby beach! Elephant Seals. White-crowned Sparrow. Think again!

We look at the Six Pelicans who rest at night and see Brown Pelicans because we already know what pelicans look like. ‘Six Pelicans Rest at night. And, for the hornbills above, an old tree hollow: Mama built a sealed nest. Or, maybe this is how toddlers see birds! Seven Finches Stand apart.

Guano-covered rocks (called Seal Rocks I am told, but my guess is that a seal would struggle to get up here to bask) just off the beach will probably quickly catch your attention. Brown Pelican and Brandt’s Cormorant roost here and can be seen flying in and out all day.

The Crowned Hornbill is among those hornbills in which during incubation the female seals herself into a tree cavity using her own droppings. It was so great, and it sealed my admiration for Veronica’s amazing dedication and skill.”. But I did one Brown Pelican release that was memorable. I held him a minute so he could look around, then I slowly opened my hands and after a few seconds he flew off and went right to a tree trunk and started acting like a wild woodpecker.
