In Australia, ornithologists have finally gotten their hands on a Night Parrot , the first such capture in more than 100 years. By tagging the Parrot and monitoring the area with remote cameras, scientists hope to learn more about this species and how to keep it safe.

UNLESS that is you get yourself down to the internationally-renowned Tambopata Research Centre in southern Peru where literally hundreds of macaws (and other parrots) congregate around a 50 meter high clay bank. At this hour I am a reluctant, under-caffeinated sherpa – and concentration must be given to the dangers of the footpath ahead.

I had a fantastic talk with him about birds, HBW and Wikipedia as I enjoyed the birds at the feeders, and the next morning he let me tag along on a quick trip up the road to look for some Lovely Fairy-wrens. There were also treats for fans of parrots, including a Double-eyed Fig-parrot and some King Parrots.

Over 1,000 animals were rescued, including 500 bull finches and 300 picoplats, The rescued wildlife also included monkeys, parrots, macaws and other species from Venezuela.
