Others say it is the west coast analog to the Fish Crow - a marine specialist that is a species in its own right. Species or subspecies the range of the Northwestern Crow extends from extreme northwestern Oregon through coastal Washington, British Columbia, and well into Alaska. We arrived in Seattle 6 days ago, at 12:30 in the morning, after being on the road, in one form or another since February 1st. Circumstances have been such, that the bulk of my visits to Nisqually, have been in the winter, so the refuge, in the peak of a Seattle Summer, is a much different place. USA species – 111.

We will cover nearly 3000 miles driving before we reach Seattle, and our final stop. Road conditions and traffic have gotten much easier now that we are traveling in the US, and so today we were headed to Eugene, Oregon. My college Alma Mater, the University of Oregon, and one of my favorite places there is. Nisqually NWR.,

Over the last weekend, my wife and I made a whirl-wind trip from Mexico, up to the Pacific Northwest, the Seattle area, where we stayed with the in-laws. Having lived in Seattle, and much of the Pacific Northwest, there were no surprises, or new species, but it certainly was enjoyable to see the winter birds that never make it down to Mexico.

She was visiting Seattle, for her Dad’s successful heart surgery. In fact, the last time, would be back in the late 70’s with my college classmates when we traveled to Malheur Refuge, up in Oregon. On her return, she was able to bundle up and bring with her, a brand new Nikon lens. This is going to be so much fun!!

The days for me to add to my Little Big Years species count are getting fewer and fewer, and with it, my budget. Such is the case when we got a call from our good friends Scott and Monica, inviting us to travel with them by sailboat up to the San Juan Islands, north of Seattle. Little Big Year species count: 834.
