The tropical habitats of Costa Rica are home to a surprising number of raptor species. Although the country is around the same size as West Virginia, 39 species of diurnal raptors are on the list. As is often the case for tropical ecosystems, there may be hundreds of species of birds at a site, but many of them are naturally rare.

Jeff Gordon and I were wandering around the seriously disturbed habitat behind the airport hotel we stayed in outside of Budapest when a bizarre mammal about the size of an opossum crossed the path in front of us. There are seventeen species of hedgehog found across Europe, Asia, and Africa, the only places where hedgehogs are native.

Why put additional pressure on a recovering species? Eastern flyway breeding populations appear to be maxing out their available habitat, and are subject to abundant natural limitations such as ground predation by coyotes, foxes, raccoons and opossums. Remember, they were hunted nearly to extinction in the East before.

As it is the only destination in Costa Rica mentioned in the book Fifty Places to Go Birding Before You Die, it comes as no surprise that the restaurant has its own eBird hotspot with more than 170 recorded species! more than two dozen species before the rain forced us inside. Checking the field guide, I came with a Common Opossum.

With that logic those trees, if left to grow, should produce something of use to at least one or two species of birds. It’s been some years since I’ve seen any Short-tailed Hawks as the entire valley is now overrun with concrete – but I’m trying my best to create some sort of oasis for any species.
