I recently traveled to Texas and made a trip to Hagerman NWR (an “Honorable Mention”), which is north of Dallas. In the Fall, Franklin’s Gulls migrate through Texas and Oklahoma on their way south. Bonus Birding : My eBird Profile also showed that I had never entered a checklist in the state of Oklahoma.

Not far behind is California (348, up from 297), followed by Arizona (294, up from 155), Florida (233, up from 227), New Jersey (223, up from 199), Oregon (221, up from 209), and Texas (218, up from 106). Thus, there are now seven states with 200+ observed species. The state with the largest increase was Arizona , with 139 species added.

Birding trips to Florida , New Mexico , and Texas are obvious too. Texas and Florida round out the Top 5. I don’t think I have added any new species, but I did add Alaska, Kansas, and Oklahoma to the group state list. A checklist from Rock Creek Park in Washington D.C. was good for 11 lifers. This native of Oklahoma, Texas, and Mexico is now recognized as a separate species, but the two species will hybridize when they meet. The Oak Titmouse resides on the Pacific Slope from southern Oregon to the Baja, while the Juniper is a bird of the Great Basin and desert riparian woods as far south as Arizona, Texas, and Mexico.
