Fortunately, the few remnant areas of mangrove forests in Costa Rica receive a certain degree of protection by either being included in official protected areas or because of legal protections provided to forest. Such protection is vital for this pair of mangrove specialists because they are barely hanging on.

4%: Mexico, West Papua (Indonesia), New Zealand, South Africa, Kenya. 8%: Brazil, Panama. Although it has a few more birds than Costa Rica (including reliable Harpy Eagles ) and some great lodges, in ecotourism terms, Panama seem to be Costa Rica’s “little brother” (there’s a hidden message to its tourism board).

Some ways to help this incredible bird include supporting the Macaw Recovery Network , any efforts to protect and reforest habitat from eastern Honduras to eastern Panama and northern Colombia, and never buying a Great Green Macaw. Yellow-naped Parrot (Amazona auropalliata). Guanacaste Hummingbird (Amazilia alfaroensis).

This spectacular, turkey-like bird roams the floor of tropical forests from eastern Mexico south to northwestern Ecuador. That changes in Costa Rica, where the vulnerable Great Curassow is easily seen at several protected sites. It also ranges widely from Mexico south to western Ecuador. Ain’t I great?

Seen Green Violetear in Mexico and Costa Rica? But, birds in eastern Mexico have even more blue and are now their own species so Lesson’s Motmot it is. Split from the Three-striped Warbler of South America, yet another species is added to the list of birds only found in the mountains of Costa Rica and Panama.

At the end of 2007, the World Society for the Protection of Animals selected the McKee Project to work on spay/neuter programs in Guatemala. Although they are best known for their work in Costa Rica, they also work in Mexico and Panama. This is a great group that I've spotlighted before.
