Salvias and the Hummers that Love Them

Some 50 species of salvias grow in Michoacán, according to one estimate. And I have personally observed 16 species of hummingbirds in the state. Like Salvia mexicana , this species is common in open areas close to (and in) Morelia itself; but it loves steep slopes, while S. I don’t know the latter’s species.

Water, Water, Everywhere

Although I had earlier seen my first Gadwalls for the season, my real finds for the day were two species which supposedly should not visit the Mexican highlands: one Black-bellied Plover , and several Dunlins. The moral of the story? Semipalmated Plovers (with a Peep for good measure) are cute.

For my state of Michoacán in central Mexico, Lago de Cuitzeo is an unusually poor site for our specialty, which is west-Mexico-only endemics. One of these shorebirds is not like the others!

Kills in Canada, Alaska and Mexico are not included in the count. Further, the crane take in Mexico is a free-for-all: neither regulated nor recorded. Initiating a hunting season on a large, charismatic species like a crane is no way to resuscitate hunting. A species which is the most abundant crane species on the planet.
