The controversial resolution, submitted by the AVMA’s House Advisory Committee, called on the association to oppose the use of live animals “procured from animal shelters or the use of live animals procured from dealers” for use in veterinary education. Without a word, the House of Delegates scuttled the resolution during a voice vote.

I thought it was an urban myth that animal shelters would actually turn over unwanted animals to laboratories for research, but apparently not. The animal shelter committee voted to end the contract, but it goes before the County commissioners in April. In return, the company can use some of the unwanted dogs for animal research.

I didn't know that there were specific breeders out there producing animal subjects for medical research. So, does this mean they are getting animals from shelters instead? Tags: universities breeders animal experimentation USDA medical research. I didn't really understand the second half of the article.

PETA was trying to get the information to find out why the university is buying cats and dogs from a West Texas animal shelter for university training or research. From the Avalanche-Journal: The university has purchased cats already scheduled for euthanasia from Odessa Animal Control since the 1980s, a shelter spokesperson, Cpl.

It reminded me of an adoption poster at the animal shelter. This adorable poster that draws you in to the sweet faces of these animals basically proclaims that it is a good thing to use their bodies for medical research, which almost always leads to pain and death. But when I got closer, I read, "Animal research opens minds."
