How many people know this about the Animal Welfare Act? The only cool thing is that Gene Bauer's views on the meat industry are so similar to those expressed on this blog a few weeks ago. While a nationwide vegan or vegetarian lifestyle change is highly unlikely, the abuse can be maintained through increased government regulation.

The ground for this will not be animal welfare, as you might expect, but environmentalism. So if animal husbandry is to be prohibited, it should be on animal-welfare grounds, not environmental grounds. Some will reduce their consumption of meat for the sake of the animals. Others will do so for the sake of the environment.

Is a vegan's efforts at advocacy worth more than a vegetarian's or even a meat eater's if they happen to agree on the same issue? If a meat eater eats meat, but hates the factory farm system or animal experimentation, do we discount anything we can get out of them because they are not "pure."

Second, it seems to assume that not eating meat is the best way to conserve grain.

A third of a century ago, when the modern animal-liberation movement was in its infancy, Martin published an essay entitled “A Critique of Moral Vegetarianism,” Reason Papers (fall 1976): 13-43. I suspect that many readers of this blog are Christians but not vegetarians. KBJ: There are different reasons to abstain from meat.

The meat industry will say yes, of course, all animals are treated and killed humanely. For some people, it is inhumane to eat meat in any situation, no matter how well the animal is treated prior to and during slaughter. In my opinion, and I am a vegetarian, the second definition of humane is the MINIMAL that we should expect.

Most informative for a discussion about vegan advocacy is the section about the animal rights movement (and unfortunately he alternately calls it “animal protection” and also refers to welfare, perhaps because of the Humane Research Council’s study that people prefer the word “protection”). But I’m merely making his point.
