Here in Mexico, I can almost always count on Black Vultures and Turkey Vultures to pad each outing’s list by two species. Occasionally I have been lucky enough to see Lesser Yellow-headed Vultures in tropical Mexico. Zone-tailed Hawks , however, are very fond of fresh meat. And how do they get this fresh meat?

Horse Slaughterhouse Proposed in New Mexico

This article reaffirms my belief that it's more humane to slaughter horses in the US than to ship them for slaughter to Canada or Mexico. I don't like it either way, but one is better than the other for sure.

As I learned this week, locals cook the unripe fruit into meat dishes, and eat the ripe fruit raw… as do birds! It turned out to be Jacaratia mexicana , which the natives call Bonete (a reference to the four-cornered “bonnet” used by ecclesiastics), or Papaya de Monte (Mountain Papaya).
