Since many of these exceptions are common birds (Wood Duck, Red-tailed Hawk, Great-horned Owl), I assume Lund saw the additional space as opportunities to teach people how to absolutely positively identify these birds, adding more text and featuring images of the species in flight or in gender-specific, nonbreeding or juvenile plumage.

My birthday bird this weekend ranks high on my list of special sightings: Northern Saw-whet Owl ! I rarely catch this cutie at Owl Woods during its spring migration, but this one couldn’t be missed. Corey had a wonderful weekend in Southern California racking up year birds in Orange and Los Angeles Counties.

Residents of southeastern Arizona that you can also see here are the Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl, Yellow-eyed Junco , and Elegant Trogon. You can fly direct to Mexico City from many American cities; while you can fly direct to Morelia from Oakland, Los Angeles, Houston, Dallas, and Chicago. I love Red-faced Warblers !

There has been an explosion in field guides as well, with many excellent guides for North America (and virtually anywhere else on the planet ) as well as comprehensive volumes dedicated to specific types of birds such as raptors , warblers , hummingbirds , owls , gulls , waterfowl , and seabirds , among others.

When we motored into Los Angeles County waters to pick up the many thousand strong flock of storm-petrels milling about. They’re not expected by any means, but this had been a good year for them and they were on the short list of species we were looking hard for. It was nice to get such long, satisfying looks.

We, along the coast in Los Angeles County, have a FY Harris’s Sparrow here now for about a week. Busy, busy, but hope to get out to look for waterfowl in the Vancouver area.
