Laughing at you, not with you

10,000 Birds

Not very interestingly, the species name “squamatum” refers to the scaly appearance of the bird rather than the blue wings. A bit confusing as the Latin name of the Scaly Laughingthrush (see below) is “subunicolor” and thus does not refer to its scales but rather to its uniform color. The shame would kill them.

15 Australian Birds (Episode 4)

10,000 Birds

It seems that quite a few zoos keep Tawny Frogmouths. When these birds breed, this can lead to highly cringeworthy announcements, for example from Adelaide Zoo : “We have egg-citing news!” If I was so inclined, I might think that they deserve to be killed by Pied Currawongs for their sinful behavior.

Birding Shanghai in June 2022

10,000 Birds

Strangely, the photo accompanying the Wikipedia entry on Collared Finchbills , Asian birds, was taken at Cincinnati zoo. I wonder what Americans would think if, in a Wikipedia entry, a Bald Eagle would be illustrated using a photo taken at an Albanian zoo. But I am grumbling a little bit about it. Nothing else.

The Passenger Pigeon & A Message From Martha: One Pigeon, Two Book Reviews

10,000 Birds

We have photographs and newspaper obituaries of Martha, the last living Passenger Pigeon, who died after a lifetime in captivity, mostly in the Cincinnati Zoo. Fuller has not preached about the evils of the human practices that killed and dislocated the Passenger Pigeon; he hasn’t moaned and groaned or sentimentalized.
