Each of the six species in Costa Rica sports beautiful plumage with green and blue hues highlighted with rufous tones, and several also have long, racket-tipped tails. It was tough to pick out just one tanager species, many are downright stunning. Dressed to kill, the deadly Bat Falcon eats more than bats. Green Honeycreeper.

which was a comparative look at apparent, visible, often in your face biomass we observe when we as diurnal primates look around us. For instance, assume (and I will NOT stand by this number, it is just one I’ve heard here and there) that kitty cats in America kill 50,000,000 birds a year. Raptors either. But this is problematic.

A huge surprise was the addition of an entirely new species for Peru, a Black Swift , found by the Forest Falcons team. An Andean Flicker on the ground in the Peruvian Andes.

Further, did those who reacted so strongly to Harambe’s killing go home and serve meat to their children? Finally, what of the audience? The hysteria of the crowd surely played a part in escalating an already frightening situation. This horrible incident has raised some tough questions indeed. Many sanctuaries do not permit breeding.

The Calgary Zoo is again under scrutiny as details emerged Friday about how a capybara, a species of giant South American rodent, died after becoming caught in a hydraulic door last weekend as it was being moved from one area to another. In November 2008, a virus killed a 15-month-old Asian elephant calf named Malti.
