Memorable encounters with Mammals: Part I Most birdwatchers enjoy seeing mammals, but the trouble with mammals is that they tend to be much more challenging to see than birds. On my 21-day Kenyan safaris we reckoned to find around 600 species of birds and around 60 mammals, both impressive totals.

Are there so many birds that cats don’t matter?

I had noted that if you took a quick look around you’d think there were a lot of birds and very few mammals. Of course, a lot of the mammals would be hiding. For instance, assume (and I will NOT stand by this number, it is just one I’ve heard here and there) that kitty cats in America kill 50,000,000 birds a year.

This was truly an incredible encounter we had been so, so fortunate to witness; a full Snow Leopard hunt from beginning to end including the take and kill. The red line follows the chase with the yellow dot indicating the first failed attack and the red dot being the final kill position. Wolves can be encountered anywhere in the park.

Feral Cats Are An Invasive Species in North America (and elsewhere)

This is approximated by the size of the animal, but really, this has to be adjusted for depending on modality of killing. Dogs are similarly dispersed across size ranges, with Foxes, Coyotes, and Wolves taking prey across different parts of the size range. We estimate that free-ranging domestic cats kill 1.4–3.7 ” Many.

At Sea With the Marine Birds of the Raincoast: A Book Review

The Achiever’s survey voyages took place from 2005 to 2008; the goal was to collect baseline data on sea mammals and marine birds. The species was seemingly killed off by feather hunters, but then, after years, reappeared at the site of one of the deserted breeding colonies, Torishima Island in Japan. And, this was badly needed.
