Serendip Sanctuary, Victoria

It is free to enter Serendip Sanctuary and as you drive or walk up the road into the parking area there are opportunities to see kangaroos and wallabies as you can see above. Although Tawny Frogmouths are well camouflaged I did notice the shape of the tree was not quite right and there they were.

Week 13: Melbourne, Australia Part 2

It just seemed wrong to post any stories about Australia without at least one Kangaroo, so on our second hike, those featured in the cover picture showed up on the edge of the forest. True to his word, we pulled up, and the tree right above us, was full of these noisy white birds. Australia Species 116.

How much bird is there, anyway?

The largest bird, forming the short bar on the right of the bird histogram, is a swan. What we see here, however, is both: Most of the mammals at this small end of the graph are nocturnal, and there is clearly a lack of overlap in body size for many species. The following histogram shows the results. This is not a surprise.

Birding across the north of Australia in July

Red Kangaroos often stood in the middle of the single lane bitumen across the north of Australia and were in no rush to move on. Red Kangaroos. It is the perfect time of year to travel the north of Australia and no doubt there are many others birders out there right now enjoying all that the north has to offer!
