We sometimes overlook a story even when it's right under our noses. Hundreds of burned, stressed and dehydrated animals — including kangaroos, koalas, lizards and birds — have already arrived at shelters across the scorched region. We are losers. The story says millions of animals may have died.

My favourite bird hide

If you are considering a vehicle for the outback and birding it is useful to have a Roo Bar, which protects your radiator if you have a close encounter with a kangaroo. The worst dust we have we call “bull dust” and if you can think of the finest talcum powder and then make it black then you are on the right track.

Serendip Sanctuary, Victoria

It is free to enter Serendip Sanctuary and as you drive or walk up the road into the parking area there are opportunities to see kangaroos and wallabies as you can see above. Although Tawny Frogmouths are well camouflaged I did notice the shape of the tree was not quite right and there they were.

It just seemed wrong to post any stories about Australia without at least one Kangaroo, so on our second hike, those featured in the cover picture showed up on the edge of the forest. True to his word, we pulled up, and the tree right above us, was full of these noisy white birds. The first stop was at Little River.

This Pied Butcherbird was right at the base to Ayres Rock. This Wedge-tailed Eagle was sitting along side one of the roads, eyeing a small road killed Kangaroo. Later the same day, this Wedge-tailed Eagle was circling right over our RV, in Erlunda, where I was later shown the nest that this beautiful bird has previously used.

The largest bird, forming the short bar on the right of the bird histogram, is a swan. (That presumption may be wrong but I don’t think it matters for the present use of the data.) The following histogram shows the results. The top histogram is mammals, the bottom one birds. This is not a surprise.
