India, February 2013. I am camping in the dry-deciduous jungle in eastern Maharashtra, near the geographic heart of India. Nitin hopes to enlarge his collection of photos of Tigers. I am curious to see whatever awaits us in the Nagzira Tiger Reserve. Nitin will stay for a few more days and get his close-ups of Tigers.)

This species was discovered (shot, actually) in the 19th century, only to be lost through the entire 20th century. A tin yellow tiger is staring at us from the Melghat Tiger Reserve gates, as the narrow tarmac road winds through teak forest ( Tectona grandis ) along the hillside. I have a quick cup of black tea and off we go.

In front of us, in the Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve one wild Grey Junglefowl runs across the road. Nowhere in India have I seen broiler horror-chicken like those sold in supermarkets back home. The tropical dry deciduous jungle, or “jungle”, however you see it, covers almost 90% of 600 km2 (230 mi2) of this protected area.

News flash–I just received the trip report from Carlos, and the tally is 419 species recorded, of which 16 were heard only; plus Ian and I saw an additional species before the tour started, courtesy of Paulo Boute. Oh my gosh! I shouldn’t have been surprised. Any suggestions?

Furthermore, the total population in Hemis National Park is estimated at 50-60 individuals, making the park an important genetic reservoir for this species which is classified on the IUCN’s Red Data List as Endangered. This is the genus of the typical large cats including Lion, Leopard, Jaguar and Tiger.
