Geladas are the sole survivors of a once abundant branch of primates that historically foraged across the grasslands of Africa, the Mediterranean and India. In parts of the Simien Mountains of northern Ethiopia, from which I have just returned, Geladas have been protected from persecution for some time. Photo by Adam Riley.

We worship birds, we hunt birds, we protect birds, and, yes, we eat birds. It includes stunning photographs by Tipling of eagle hunters (as in Kazakhs who hunt with eagles), Stellar Sea Eagles in Hokkaido, Japan, and Black Kites at the dump near New Delhi, India. As they say, the relationship is complicated.

Birds of Bolivia: Field Guideā€“A Book Review

That’s pretty amazing–Bolivia has more bird species than India! This is more than eBird reports–a checklist generated from the citizen science database lists only 1,413 species. The source of this ranking, BirdLife International, lists Bolivia as currently having 1,439 bird species, including 18 breeding endemics.

Birding Tongbiguan, Yunnan (part 1)

Atherton (1797-1827), a naturalist (whatever that means exactly) and a member of the British Army in India. He also served with the 13th Light Dragoons, fighting with them at Waterloo (though he can only have been about 18 at that point – I guess child protection laws were somewhat lax at that time). A giant squirrel, actually.
