No, wait,Red-shouldered Hawk dragged into the water by the weight of its prey, a giant rat. One eyed birds often get put down or aren’t released but they can survive and can be fierce hunters, like this big female Redtail. Redtails hunt at night… sometimes. They will take baths but they prefer to do it on purpose.

So though I visited Lynford, I didn’t see a Hawfinch on this occasion as I wasn’t there at the right time, though I did meet a number of hopeful Hawfinch hunters (HHHs), none of whom reported a sighting. Sadly, many fail, as the finches favour the hornbeams for roosting, so are best seen at dawn or dusk, rarely in the middle of the day.

That for the latter nature went on without them, letting them observe, seems to be proved by the fact that there doesn’t seem to be a big difference in your chance of getting wounded by a small to medium forest mammal if you are hunting them or if you are gathering plant products. Which keep eating rat poison. Or get your own.

The whistling duck call carries with it the crimes of big business, the failures of governments and the ignorance of irresponsible hunters. The combined effects of hunting, habitat loss and predation by introduced animals like rats and mongoose have extirpated the species from some islands and reduced numbers significantly on others.
