Only a month ago, a good morning spent gazing at my garden could yield 20 species; but now, suddenly, my goal is 10. And in another month, when the rainy season makes my birdbath less attractive, that number will drop to around 5 species.). There were about 40 in this group. So how did the winter of 2020-2021 shape up down here?

The only drawback is that both places are highly trafficked with runners (both fast and not so fast), jabbering housewives with strollers, walkers (both fast and not so fast), camoed-out photographers with lenses that would make Piers Morgan call for an assault weapons ban on camera gear and an assortment of other frenetic bipedals.

That’s pretty amazing–Bolivia has more bird species than India! The source of this ranking, BirdLife International, lists Bolivia as currently having 1,439 bird species, including 18 breeding endemics. The guide covers 1,433 species, the number of birds documented at the end of 2014, the cutoff point for the book.

The proprietor of our ecolodge guides my small group of birders up a steep slope where we see, just at the point where a scope view deteriorates into pixels, a huge bird—a Chaco Eagle, also known as a Crowned Eagle—on a huge nest.
