I began a program for PBS on a group of young kids in a small town in South Dakota. On Mother’s Day, an F2 Tornado hit the small town of Delmont, South Dakota. The next spring she reported that her first class was doing very well and were able to rapidly identify nearly 200 species. That blew my mind.

Swallows have migrated north to south along the Americas for millennia. Suddenly a group of barn swallows hatched in a barn or underpass in North America decides to stay in the wintering grounds and start a breeding colony there. This year offered no change from the norm as a group of birders were able to find six male Eurasian Wigeons hanging out with a even larger group of Americans. The flight shot of the male Eurasian, taken by Tom Dunkerton, shows the unique plumage that is completely diagnostic to that species. Sticks out, doesn’t he?

And a very happy Masemas for anyone who observes my son Mason’s birthday (probably not as many as the last group!) Turkeys, 3 or 4 species of woodpeckers, all kinds of song birds grace our view constantly. All conditions are perfect here in central South Dakota for the waterfowl travelers. As I said, we are blessed.
