Controversial Elephant Death at San Diego Zoo

An animal rights group has called for a federal investigation into the death of an elephant at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. Umoya, a 21-year-old African elephant, died Thursday, possibly due to injuries suffered during an attack by another elephant. PETA and In Defense of Animals oppose keeping elephants in zoos.

Rescuing the Vick dogs was a controversial move by Best Friends and some animal groups, most notably PETA, did not agree with it. I'm a dues-paying member of both groups but, while I support euthanasia when it is CLEARLY an act of mercy, I come down pretty hard on Best Friends' side here.

Humans get all wrapped up in stories of those who can communicate their sufferings. There is a group for every cause. One of the benefits that human rights movements have is that they are articulating for themselves. Animals can't do that. The animals can't say, "This hurts me," "Stop it," or "I have a right to my life." Best Friends?
