Late Winter Birding in Munich

10,000 Birds

As South Germany always has different birds on offer to the area around Bonn, I had to take my camera with me. I was a bit surprised to see a few Barnacle Geese – they were not ringed but they must’ve been escapees since they were very tame. I spent a weekend in Munich recently to visit my girlfriend and my brother.

The Rose-ringed Parakeets of Heidelberg

10,000 Birds

Here in Germany, we don’t wish we had. Yes, Germany has parrots, or parakeets to be more precise. Unlike North America, Germany has never had naturally occurring psittacines that went extinct, and the one we have is a true and complete invasive alien introduction. Yes, the Egyptian Geese there are countable.

Birding Botswana’s Borders

10,000 Birds

I have caught a bus across Europe, but I can’t really claim to have “been” to Germany or Belgium. Even without being on the water it was possible watch birds across the river, as evidenced by my lifer pair of African Pygmy Geese , which flew down the river and landed on the Namibian side.

From here Eurasian Wigeon, Northern Shovellers, Common Teal and Greylag Geese could be seen. Another nice bird is the Common Shelduck , a bird I more usually associate with the coast and estuaries.

Winter Birding in Bonn

10,000 Birds

As my parents live in Bonn in Germany, I have been birding a few times in some spots surrounding the city when visiting them over the last few years, including the Siegaue (riverine and grassy habitats) and the Siebengebirge (mainly forest). Very rarely, Barnacle Geese are also seen feeding on the lawn, probably on passage.

My Year in Birding 2012
