Sometimes on long car rides, my spouse and I try to think of fun little games to play with words. "The Lazy Naturalist" is a game about identifying animals whose common names reference other animals. You play the game merely by discovering and sharing with me/us the name of a real animal. However, it is a wasp.

It was the start of the shark season, which meant I saw my first Great White Shark attacks on Northern Elephant Seals , but it was also the best season for whales. The seas were glass still, and far out we could see whales, dozens of the things. Mostly Humpback Whales , but also Blue Whales. A Humpback Whale.

We later signed up for a whale and birdwatching tour with Captain Wayne , who had a smallish 12-person boat. Watching the birds in action felt like playing a video game, where your field of vision is constantly pelted by flying objects. Happy puffins. Common Murres on Gull island. Not to mention the phenomenal gulls circling overhead.

In many respects a pelagic trip off Cape Point is the marine equivalent of the classic African ‘safari’ game drive. To this day, the anticipation of a weather-dependent sea birding trip still holds great appeal for me, and with it the hope of sighting something new and exciting as the ‘mega-tick’ of the day.

Furthermore we have another very special stork-like bird, the regal Shoebill , previously known as the Whale-headed Stork but now placed in its own family. Previously known as the Whale-headed Stork, its scientific name of Balaeniceps rex translates as “King Whalehead”, in reference to its giant whale or shoe-shaped head and bill.
