To explain what a Grallard is one must first go back to those societies and recall that one of their predominant preoccupations was game. New Zealand had, once upon a time, some fairly spectacular game birds, including massive flightless geese, massive flightles rails, and really enormous moa. The news wasn’t good.

After spending Christmas Day birding around Broome and observing 92 species we spent the week making a mental note of what bird species were where. Then you take into account that the tides will be completely different and it is a whole new game! Regardless of the weather they were well protected!

It sounded birdy and I was game. This was the first geological site protected in the Djerdap area, formed along a fault by incision of the Boljetinska River into the sedimentary rocks. Other species include Grey Wagtail and Marsh Tit. Somrda Peak (810 m a.s.l.)
