The marine protected area status was designated in 2013. It has had very few humans walk its soil and who have had little impact to this otherwise pristine nature.

And while the scientific species name kasumba sounds like some frightening new fitness trend or a dancing game performed on cruise ships, it is apparently just the Malay term for red. It is also classified as Near Threatened.

If there are human fishing activities then all the better – Marabous will gather in numbers around fishermen’s docks and fish markets, in fact anywhere where fish are cleaned and scraps disposed of, allowing these intelligent birds to obtain a free meal. They also prey on frogs and crabs.
