A subject that Aelian returns to again and again is the still-contentious issue of the animal mind , and to what degree the creatures he describes can be accurately said to learn, reason, and have morals. When it is caught, it pisses all over itself, so that the fur is unfit to use, even though it could be put to many good applications.&#

I've always thought of horse-drawn carriages the way I think about greyhound racing or fur: Most people are against them, so why are they still around? Greyhound racing is dying, for sure, but not because people are necessarily against it. It's dying because of low attendance at a venue that's relatively expensive to maintain.

Does my proposal as to what makes killing another human being generally a major moral wrong in any way help us with deciding what, if anything, is wrong with killing non-human animals and foetuses? Systematic cullings in the absence of feasible alternatives, therefore, may be morally permissible. I believe it does help.

Second, many of the things you can do to stop supporting animal cruelty—like not buying or wearing fur or fur trim—require minimal effort and no expense! Obviously, since not buying and not wearing fur requires minimal effort and no expense, that's a good place to start. Where should you begin?
