The rights view is not opposed to efforts to save endangered species. If people are encouraged to believe that the harm done to animals matters morally only when these animals belong to endangered species, then these same people will be encouraged to regard the harm done to other animals as morally acceptable.

I foresee a day, perhaps not far in the future, in which it is illegal to raise cows, pigs, and other animals for food. The ground for this will not be animal welfare, as you might expect, but environmentalism. The best thing that one can do for animals, in the long run, is to persuade people to stop eating them.

While spending hours in the car I've been thinking about various issues related to sentient nonhumans, animal rights and veganism. Imagine if kids in 4-H were taught how to raise dogs for dogfighting (not a perfect analogy, I know). Trying to program kids to accept the killing of someone they love is cruel.

In fact, a whole lot of semi-vegans can do much more for animals than the tiny number of people who are willing to give up all animal products and scrupulously read labels. Emily has taken to sleeping right next to wherever Sky is. There are so many decisions to be made and we're excited to raise our little girl with intention. The message Sky gets at Babies-R-Us is largely that animals are her friends. Our job is to make sure that her respect for animals doesn't turn into insult and betrayal.
