I wrote previously about the prolific birding that is to be had in the small town of Baringo, Kenya. The now familiar sound of a pair of African Fish-Eagles dominated the soundscape. We had several close views as the raptors would pick up discarded fish from the many fishing boats, a relationship our guides capitalized upon.

In my younger days I always kept year lists: my best ever year was 1986, when I topped the 1,000 mark thanks to trips to Australia, Kenya and various European destinations. However, I was delighted to find a Razorbill, fishing enthusiastically in a Norfolk harbour. A Rock Pipit, close by, was also a year tick.

Hard by the convention center (barely 2 miles as the Fish Crow flies, dare I say?) Aisles of exhibitors tempted visitors with birding trips to such far-flung locations as Colombia, Kenya, and Sri Lanka, and grown men and women got all kid-in-a-candy-store at the optics booths.

Here, in south-west Ethiopia’s awkwardly named “Southern Nations, Nationalities, and People’s Region”, bordering Kenya and Sudan, the great Omo River dominates this dry savanna valley, resulting in some of Africa’s most well developed and best preserved arid-zone riverine forests.

Their population is estimated to have decreased 61% over the past 3 generations, mostly due to food shortages as a result of commercial overfishing by trawlers, and also fluctuations in the populations and ranges of their favored fish species.
