Pied Oystercatcher nesting

There are sixteen pairs of Pied Oystercatchers and they have varying success at raising young birds. The main problem appears to be feral cats, but there is also predation from birds of prey and the parent Pied Oystercatchers do their utmost to protect their young. The last time they successfully raised a chick was in 2012.

The Wildlife Rehabilitator’s Wish List

The general public is out and about, birds and animals are raising their young, and human/wildlife interaction is at its peak. I wish for a federal law prohibiting domestic and feral cats from roaming free outdoors. Why is there no state or federal money available to care for federally protected species? Summer is high season.

Feral Cats Are An Invasive Species in North America (and elsewhere)

I once knew a guy who kept and raised cats. I find it astonishing that people argue of whether feral cats are bad for birds in North America. This almost certainly can be argued to be true just on the basis of logic, because feral Cats are proficient hunters and are entirely out of ecological place. Unless we put them there.

We can only hope that by laying only one egg and having only one chick to raise that they may have more luck second time round. We do not add debris to protect the nests and the main threat to the nests still appears to be feral cats. Pied Oystercatcher nest site.

With assistance from the Negril Area Environmental Protection Trust (NEPT) a boardwalk and nature centre have been established. This conservation effort has resulted in habitat and protection for nearly the entire population of West Indian Whistling Ducks in Jamaica.
