Count Your Chickens (In the Florida Keys)

But as of right now there is nowhere in the United States where a birder can see a chicken and count it on his or her list despite the fact that there is a well established and long lasting Feral Chicken population in the Florida Keys. It is time for the Florida Ornithological Society to allow for the counting of Feral Chickens.

Yeah, right. The only mammals of the day were feral Nutrias (Coypus), aquatic rodents originally from southern South America released from the bankrupt fur-farms and well established here. I am checking for darker heads and necks, but the sunset is taking over… “How do you manage to tell them apart,” I ask him.

The European Christmas Bird Count

Two hundred yards further, the first Common Goldeneye and Smew started to appear and, while counting Smew and geese, a Great Bittern took flight from one stand of reeds to another, right in front of us. And this one chose to fly right in front of us. It is not an uncommon bird, but being so secretive, I see it only every other year.

You drive towards Jones Beach then hang a left down Ocean Parkway, ignoring the birder sitting next to you pointing out a possible Merlin and newly arrived Brant because you need to drive at just the right speed. What if it’s an escapee? I should go.

By the end of a day, the best bird was the White-tailed Eagle that caught and ate a fish right in front of us – a species they have seen in the UK only once. Yet, my best bird was a Common Kingfisher in a quick and low fight above a wheat field – I have never seen anything like it.
