Common Moorhens at Hannover Zoo

10,000 Birds

Intriguingly, Common Moorhens are also rather common in Germany’s large ornamental city parks and zoos. I am not referring to the one incident when two Carrion Crows at Basel Zoo suddenly descended on a grazing Common Moorhen and ripped it apart for no apparent other reason than joyful play. Beware of Crocodiles.

Birding Hongbenghe, Yunnan (Part 1)

10,000 Birds

This is the home of the Rusty-naped Pitta , admittedly one of the less glamorous of the family, particularly the subspecies found in Yunnan, but still a nice sight and still a pitta. No doubt, the Lesser NLT will be relieved not to be bossed around by its erstwhile bigger family member anymore. His obituary was published in Nature.

10,000 Birds

After she died, William decided to stick with the family and married the widowed daughter-in-law of Sarah Amherst and like Sarah, a dowager countess of Plymouth (it took me a while to figure out what this means, but then my parents always had difficulties explaining to me at family gatherings who was related with whom).

Laughing at you, not with you

10,000 Birds

Not bad given that the 5 families in the inner circle of the laughingthrush family have a combined number of about 68 species. Not very interestingly, the species name “squamatum” refers to the scaly appearance of the bird rather than the blue wings. This post shows some of them.

Birding Nonggang, Guangxi, China

10,000 Birds

While the Black-throated Laughingthrush is native to Southeast Asia, it is also kept at the Toronto Zoo and has its own web page there. However, as the zoo is (at the time of writing this post) closed due to covid, you still have to leave Canada and come to Southeast Asia to see it. Which (due to covid) you probably cannot.

15 Australian Birds (Episode 4)

10,000 Birds

It seems that quite a few zoos keep Tawny Frogmouths. When these birds breed, this can lead to highly cringeworthy announcements, for example from Adelaide Zoo : “We have egg-citing news!” The Black-faced Monarch is a relative in the same bird family, the Monarchidae.

The Little Big Year-Week 44: Off to the islands ‘Mon

10,000 Birds

It seems his family of 5, had rented a condo that sleeps 8, at Atlantis Resort, on Paradise Island, in the Bahamas. I was fortunate enough to be following in Mike and Corey’s shoes, and between referring back to their posts here, and an e-mail from Corey, at least had formed a plan of sorts.
