The only harassment came from the resident Red-tailed Squirrel family – which seemed to be more curiosity than anything else, as their nest was just about two feet away. Hopefully they found a suitable place nearby to raise the next generation! Both species seemed content to observe each other though.

The lodge is unusual in having a raised walkway behind the lodge, allowing those of us keen to bird or watch wildlife when most normal people are resting in the middle of the day. Along with more orangutans and diminutive Common Pygmy Squirrels, we also found a massive cobra one day! A side tributary. The birding was pretty ace too.

You typically do not find a bird this naked or featherless outside of the nest unless there has been a storm or the nest has been attacked by predator like a raccoon, chipmunk, squirrel or corvids. If you cannot find the nest or it’s too destroyed, do not try and raise a chick this young. That is probably one of the adults.

There’s a Three-striped Palm Squirrel by the side of the track, while Jungle Bush Quails are running across it in front of our Maruti Gypsy, almost the official safari vehicle of India. The closer one raises her head, than lies back. Telia yawns, raises and sprays her urine on a dead tree stump, marking her territory.

I’ve noted at least nine species of reptiles and amphibians, even our native opossum and squirrel. Thankfully, they now have a home here where they can court, build their nest, and raise their young. Of course, various species of bats as well.

Chimpanzees and elephants grieve the loss of family and friends, and gorillas hold wakes for the dead. Paul’s family noticed that whenever he was about to have an attack, Tinker would get agitated. Caledonian crows live in small family groups and youngsters learn to fashion and use tools by watching adults. Jethro and the Bunny.
