Come@Me: Hummingbirds are Jerks

10,000 Birds

It would use that mini rapier of a beak to full poking effect if the hapless human tried to take a sip from its feeder, or pick one of its flowers, or even neglect to fill the feeder on time. It’s not good for anyone and might be why many of us prefer to go birding out there in the woods, away from it all.

Asia’s Deadliest Bird: The Brown Prinia

10,000 Birds

Other birders might however owe their very lives to this neglect. Here is a little comparison (Black Mamba courtesy of Tad Arensmeier and Wikipedia , and excuse the horrible prinia crop): Disturbing, right? And, of course, the wood-warblers. Northern Parula. American Redstart.

The First Swallow-tail of Spring

10,000 Birds

I recently returned from my family’s annual spring trip to Florida, and unlike years previous I didn’t get any special time set aside to bird this time round.
