That fallacious family name seems to have encouraged all manner of knaves, dunderheads, and miscreants when time came to label species. Appropriate appellations should respect the birds, not 19th century naturalists and their friends and family. I love Nashville Warblers from every angle. Well, no more!

Looking for Lost Warblers at Parque Rio Loro, Costa Rica

One such star avian family is the Setophagidae, the birds known as wood-warblers. Those would be birds like Nashville, Black-throated Blue, Prairie, and Cape-May Warblers. No, not a warbler but big enough to be one and a star in its own right. Yes, you read that right. Violet Sabrewing. We got tired of looking at them.

What I feel right now is joy at their return. I did not yet see Orange-crowned , Nashville , MacGillivray’s , or Yellow-rumped (Audubon’s) Warblers. Of course, one never limits oneself to a single taxonomic family. In contrast, this Slate-throated Redstart really knew how to pose.
