It is hard to imagine any birder not liking woodpeckers – they are the “motherhood and apple pie” of the avian world. The Bearded Woodpecker (Mkuze, South Africa) does not really look any more bearded than many other woodpeckers. It is the most widespread woodpecker in Africa, claims the HBW.

This leg of the trip was for the most part all about my father-in-law. We have been dragging him thru every bird spot possible, so he could go to Scotland to see where his family is from. That does not mean that we can’t make a stop or two along the way, right? Speaking of Bank Swallows , here is one of those family groups.

So far as I can determine the swan was not officially granted status as the national bird of Denmark by law but by a popular vote held by either Danish Television or Denmark Radio. Wicked, right? Because I have birded southern California in winter several times there weren’t any of the normally occurring birds that I could get within easy reach of my in-laws house in Orange County. Permission to use the car was obtained from the brother-in-law and permission to be missing until 10 AM was obtained from Daisy.

In the right season, with a little luck, we often find it, and sometimes it perches high and long enough that we can admire its scimitar of a bill, its stern face pattern, and even the patch of rusty red on the undertail that gives the species its English and its scientific names. It’s too bad that the owl had to die because the one team couldn’t keep it under control, but I feel even worse that this ass will more than likely not even receive a fine for this animal cruelty because Columbia has no laws on the subject. The naming of the hornbill family is a bit farther fetched. Wikimedia Commons Bucerotidae is etymologically opaque to most birders, I’d venture, but when Rafinesque described the family almost two centuries ago, he had kine on his mind. Following a detour to Harvard Law School, he took the Ph.D. Wicked, right?
