To us on the traditional side of the Atlantic, they’ll always belong to the family Iznogoudae , the birds who want to become warblers instead of the warblers. As we move from Spain towards the east however, it starts getting interesting as soon as we reach Italy. And do they ever try so hard.

By the very end of summer – right around the time the grape harvest is taking place – Barn Swallows have already begun to vacate the fields and meadows of Europe, winging their way south to Africa for the winter (and not disappearing, as Aristotle believed, to hibernate in trees until the following spring). Ironically, thanks to the non-sustainable, land poisoning agriculture seen en route, there is a straight, fast, good road that zooms right on up to Los Chiles, the closest town to Cano Negro. I guess that isn’t too surprising since a quick 30 minute float down the river goes right into Nicaragua. We had several Least Bitterns.

Each species is numbered, with the numbers referring to the illustrations on the right. This unfortunately happens with the large Tanager (Thraupidae) family here.

Europe… with such low herp diversity the locals split any sub-population of a species that occurs on either the Iberian Peninsula or Italy as a new species just to make them feel better out themselves, naturally is the continent that rose to the top of my trip list. Either that or having family friends in Germany.

After my grim exposing you last month to Europe’s fifty shades of brown, I felt it incumbent upon me to right my wrong by introducing you to Europe’s most attractive bird, the Red-billed Leiothrix. So a plan was made one fine holiday day to visit the birds nearby, with the rest of the family promising to be tolerant and patient.
