Or would be, had I encountered more of them – so far, I have seen only a very small share of the approximately 233 woodpecker species, and got decent photos of an even smaller number – not much more than 10% of all of them. So, writing a post about them is easy.

Many species build nests of sticks or mud or spit on human-made structures , or in houses we’ve constructed specifically for their use. Taxonomically, swallows are one of the few families of birds that has seen little change in its ranks. The family is global in its distribution, with 83 species of around 19 genera.

That’s right, there is another Beat Writer at 10,000 Birds! Mike Freiberg grew up in Philadelphia, PA, where his family introduced him to the world of birding. He attended Iowa State University where he earned his B.S. Mike Freiberg is the latest addition to the amazing group that is the 10,000 Birds Beat Writers.

The smellier the better, particularly as, unusually for birds, many species can boast a robust sense of smell. In any case, our hang-ups with vultures clearly stem from our own issues rather than any inherently bizarre trait of the species themselves. Vultures famously feed on carrion. Dead things. millions years ago.

The specific geographic area covered is “east of the western boundaries of Ontario, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Arkansas, and Louisiana”; the eastern United States and Canada is known for its diversity of odonates. Yes, 675 photographs.
