Big news about a small bird broke earlier this month when bird researchers from several nations announced that the species formerly known as Spotted Wren-Babbler ( Spelaeornis formosus ) — a tiny, secretive bird of montane forests from the eastern Himalayas to southeast China — is not a Spelaeornis wren-babbler at all.

This is the home of the Rusty-naped Pitta , admittedly one of the less glamorous of the family, particularly the subspecies found in Yunnan, but still a nice sight and still a pitta. The scientific species name of the Rusty-naped Pitta oatesi honors Eugene William Oates (1845-1911), an English civil servant in India and naturalist.

In contrast, Elliot’s Laughingthrush is a near-endemic in China (it also lives in a few spots in India near the Chinese border) but much easier to see here at Baxi forest than the crossbill. Interestingly, the Slaty-backed Flycatcher follows a similar color scheme despite being part of a very different family.

That’s pretty amazing–Bolivia has more bird species than India! Argentinian Julián Quillén Vidoz, is both a co-author and an illustrator of Birds of Bolivia , and is apparently one of those multi-talented birders, with research (in Bolivia), guiding, and illustration on his resume.

If I was an ornithologist aiming for a grant, I would now definitely highlight the need for more research on this topic. The researchers are quite aware of the differences between humans and birds and thus have completely ignored another explanation for this behavior.
