I viewed them at dusk, through a telescope, from a ridge overlooking the area they were hunting. At the time we were looking, without success, for White-backed Woodpeckers. Why the weasel should be the head of the family doesn’t really make sense. Why not the stoat family or the badger family?)

I saw two Pitta species at Hongbenghe, both among the slightly less glamourous among the pitta family: The Blue-naped Pitta … … and the closely related Rusty-naped Pitta. One would think that for a species as common in Europe as the Grey-headed Woodpecker , the HBW would spend some effort to update the species entry.

The Plain Sunbird is the plain vanilla version of the otherwise often very colorful family (ok, a very low-budget sort of joke). So, if you ever think of dressing up as an Orange-backed Woodpecker of different ages, remember: you will need to spend a lot of money on costumes.

What could motivate gunmen (I cannot call them hunters) in two states to deliberately kill North America’s tallest and most critically endangered bird? And I submit that it poses an unacceptable risk to whooping cranes to encourage hunting of the very populations of sandhill cranes that mingle with them. Another thing to consider.

This outstanding member of the wattlebird family is unique among songbirds in having different shaped beaks for each of the sexes. Filling the niche of the woodpecker here they use their small and long bills to explore and hammer through rotting wood and bark for insects. It certainly has no known relatives. Laughing Owl.
