Komondorok have been bred as livestock guard dogs originating from Hungary, and when threatened they reveal sheer athletic muscularity and a deep, ferocious bark that is sure to scare anyone.

June – Hungary. In June I went to Hungary. We had a wonderful family vacation in Germany and the Czech Republic during which I managed to do a bit of birding. I also appreciated Mississippi Kites not too far from my job, great birds on the coast of Queens , and more wood-warblers. Northern White-breasted Hedgehog.

But I have been sick with different kinds and forms of cold since the beginning of December with no interruption, and so has my entire family. It subsequently spread to Budapest/ Hungary (2005, 2006), Zürich/ Switzerland (2006), and north-east Italy (2008/2009). Okay, I meant to write an entertaining post. I honestly did.

The one bird I did not see here, however, was the Bateleur Eagle … One highlight in the area is the Saddle-billed Stork , likely to be the tallest species in the stork family. Another member of the stork family, the African Openbill , looks like it is could benefit from a good orthodontist. And sadly, it is listed as Endangered.

Wrynecks are fascinating because they are woodpeckers, taxonomically and evolutionarily, yet they do not share many behaviors and anatomical features of most members of the Picidae family. But they are woodpeckers: the genus Jynx of the subfamily Jynginae of the Picidae family. They are beautiful, but in a different way.
