My connection with Ghana began rather unexpectedly (and as it turned out, rather humorously) more than ten years ago. We already had South Africa, Zambia and Uganda under our belts, but my clients’ request for the next year came right out of the blue: Ghana! What makes Ghana so special?

In my family, we have a tradition (in place since 1347 when we survived the Black Death) of “ wait over the weekend and see what happens ”. Called the family doctor, went by, and got sent to the Tropical Diseases Institute without her taking as much as my pulse… Not good for one’s morale, I can tell you.

These large seedeaters (belonging to the weaver family) are so named for the generally black plumage of the adult male, resembling a widow in mourning. The 9 species of whydah are brood-parasitic seedeaters belonging to the Indigobird family. A family of Red-faced Mousebirds take a drink in Namibia. Widowbirds. Sugarbirds.

Families that are endemic to the continent include such strange birds as Shoebill , Secretarybird , Hamerkop , mousebirds and rockfowl ( picathartes ) and delightful groups including bushshrikes, sugarbirds, rockjumpers, woodhoopoes, turacos and hyliotas.

This group of 4 species (as well as all the remaining “weavers” that are covered below) are not even placed in the weaver family ( Ploceidae ) but in Passeridae – the Old World Sparrow family.
