A Most Remarkable Book

In other words, the caracara’s behavior is totally different from that of, say, the peregrine, though they’re both falcons, and diverged from each other on their evolutionary paths pretty recently. The the mid year winners are….

This Great Blue Heron was found up near Seattle this winter, and I was as cold as this birds looks to be! I happen to think the Crested Cara cara is one of the most beautiful birds in the falcon family. This Song Sparrow was in the Seattle area last winter, and got so nicely framed with the local foliage.

Nisqually Delta Wildlife Refuge

This wonderful piece of birding real estate can be found 8 miles east of Olympia, and an hour’s drive south of Seattle Washington, right along the I-5 corridor. Unfortunately, while I was still living in the Seattle area, I had discovered the Nisqually Refuge to late, just weeks prior to setting sail south.

Santa comes to La Paz early

She was visiting Seattle, for her Dad’s successful heart surgery. One of the huge thrills I got was to watch a Peregrine Falcon sweep thru the tidal area, spooking one of the large flocks of sandpipers, and then flash back thru the flock and grab breakfast. There were plenty of peeps for me to focus on.

And so the “Little Big Year” begins

We will get started here, in our adopted home of La Paz, Mexico, work our way north to Seattle where we catch our first airplane flight to New Zealand. There was just enough light to see a Peregrine Falcon swoop down thru the parking lot here at Marina Palmira. The first rays of sunlight brought me my first bird of 2018.

Week Five: We arrive in the land of Kiwis

The glitch in that theory is that we are continuing on around the world, and ending up back in Seattle, so we will never actually get that lost 24 hours back. Seattle to Los Angeles, to Auckland New Zealand, and then to Christchurch, N.Z. March 1st, 2018 is a day that will just be wiped from the face of my calendar.
