A large, bulky falcon cruising overhead could only be a Peregrine Falcon. As soon as we noticed it, a Merlin appeared from nowhere and headed directly for the Peregrine, divebombing the larger falcon. As per usual falcon procedure, it all happened much too quickly for me to get a decent photograph!

Watch and listen for the birds as they rustle through the leaf litter. Not needed and with hidden wasp nests and five species of highly camouflaged vipers somewhere out there in the leaf litter and blending in with low vegetation…not the best of ideas. The easiest of the wood-quails in Costa Rica is the Spotted Wood-Quail.

But I had hoped to see what may be around, holding out hope that an early Peregrine Falcon would be staking out an aerie in the cliffs. Littered with goose droppings there is little doubt that many Snow Geese nest there, and the gravely delta is an ideal place for Semipalmated and Common Ringed Plovers. Our tent at Ijjijuarjuk.

At 6am it was still dark in the (relatively) high elevation rainforest where Golden-crowned Warblers fluttered just above the leaf litter, Collared Trogons and Hepatic Tanagers gathered to feed on the bounty of moths still on offer. This hulking Peregrine Falcon was very accommodating to say the least. Pinnated Bittern.

Rufous Treecreepers

Rufous Treecreeper feeding among the leaf litter. At the top of Devil’s Slide we had a close encounter with a pair of Peregrine Falcons and there were also a pair of Wedge-tailed Eagles soaring over the National Park.
