I am driving down the dirt track in the Carska Bara Ramsar site (Serbia) and a cloud of dust closely follows me, like a rider on a pale horse. The only falcon that has the manoeuverability to chase and catch swallows in flight… a few pirouettes later, he leaves with empty talons. Just for fun, it seems – joie de vivre?

Raptors : A pretty high number of raptor species occur in Costa Rica but hold your feathered horses raptorphiles because most are rare! For example, including falcons and excluding owls, I have seen 34 species and still have a chance at several more. Speaking of owls. : A kettle of Mississippi Kites from last year.

Fair parts of the property were used to cultivate different crops, some areas were pasture for cows and horses, and other areas were covered in forest that was meant to be logged, selectively or otherwise. Scope looks were had at the pygmy-owl just before we saw the jacamar. The picture might not be so great but the bird is.

I cajoled my friends into a trip up to Polson to see the Snowy Owls. Besides the owls themselves, I promised them the best pie in Montana, which is to be found in the Ronan Cafe. We passed through a town called Paradise, Montana, where a woman was leading a horse across the lawn of the post office. We saw not an owl either.

In the end, it was birding that has taken him from his native Serbia, across the Balkans and Turkey, to the very borders of the Old World: East Anglia and Spain, southern Africa and India, where he chased that country’s rarest owl.
